The Broken Vase

الڤاز المكسوره

This project explores the significance of traditional garments in the Middle East, highlighting their role as vital expressions of cultural identity and heritage. These garments, crafted through meticulous hand weaving and intricate embroidery, are not just clothing; they embody history, artistry, and personal stories. Each piece reflects the unique aesthetic and cultural narratives of the communities it comes from, showcasing vibrant colors and elaborate designs that signify various social, religious, and regional identities.

This project incorporates a film production aspect, aiming to visually document the craftsmanship and the stories behind these traditional garments. This film serves as a medium to capture the rich narratives of artisans and their communities, showcasing their skills and the cultural significance of their work. The collaboration with local artisans and filmmakers is crucial, as it ensures an authentic representation of the traditions and challenges faced in preserving these practices.

The project ultimately aims to raise awareness and appreciation for these traditional garments, advocating for the preservation of the skills and knowledge that have defined Middle Eastern cultures for centuries while capturing their essence through film.

In the film, the representation of cultural clothing plays a pivotal role in conveying authenticity and depth. The vendor's attire, inspired by traditional Egyptian garments, showcases a deep maroon color that beautifully complements her skin tone, enhancing her presence on screen. This choice of color not only stands out but also harmonizes with the muted green and white fabrics, creating a visually appealing balance that reflects the rich cultural heritage of Egypt. The film also highlights the importance of sustainability, as seen in a scene with a woman lying on the floor covered in fabric scraps, working on a project that emphasizes the repurposing of old materials and clothing. This attention to detail in costume design, along with the focus on reusing and repairing items, significantly influences the overall aesthetic of the film, grounding it in a culturally rich context that resonates with viewers.
